A beauty ritual straight from the kitchen: Nourish Your Hair with a Herbal Tea Rinse

Updated: Aug 4

When you think of tea, you probably imagine sipping something warm and calming in your favourite mug. But your cup of tea isn’t always a beverage.

It can also be a powerful, all-natural hair care treatment too!

When I'm not creating tea blends, you’ll find me geeking out over DIY beauty experiments, using natural ingredients straight from my kitchen.

For many years, I’ve been committed to reducing myself & my family's exposure to harmful chemicals, by eliminating as many toxic ingredients (as possible) from my beauty and household products.

This journey has led me to explore natural alternatives using ingredients commonly found in the kitchen. I spend a lot of time researching and testing DIY recipes that are not only effective but also safe to use.

My latest focus is on a herbal hair rinse, and I’m pleased to say the results have been very promising so far!

It’s a simple, natural & cost effective way to support healthy hair without using synthetic products.

We'll dive in a bit deeper into the reasons why:

Herbal tea rinses have been used for centuries to nourish the scalp, promote hair growth, and restore shine. There are many herbs which can help to maintain healthy hair, however today we're focusing on a potent combo: rosemary, nettle, sage & peppermint.

Each of these herbs brings something special to the mix, making them a perfect team for hair health.

Why These Herbs?

🌿 Rosemary

Stimulates hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp.

Helps reduce dandruff and itchy scalp.

Strengthens roots and may prevent premature greying.

🍃 Nettle

Rich in iron, silica, and sulfur, all essential for strong, thick hair.

Helps combat hair shedding and supports healthy scalp conditions.

Known for its anti-inflammatory and DHT-blocking properties (which may help with hair loss).

🌱 Sage

Sage contains vitamins B, C, and K, along with minerals like zinc and magnesium, which can stimulate hair follicles.

Its antioxidant properties help increase blood circulation to the scalp, encouraging healthy hair growth.

🌱 Peppermint

Creates a refreshing, tingling sensation that awakens hair follicles.

Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

Adds shine and helps control oiliness.

DIY Herbal Hair Tea Rinse Recipe

✨ Ingredients:

1 tablespoon dried rosemary

1 tablespoon dried nettle

1 tablespoon dried sage

1 tablespoon dried peppermint

2–3 cups filtered water

🫖 Instructions:

Boil the water and remove it from heat.

Add the herbs to the hot water.

Cover and let it steep for 30–45 minutes (or until cool).

Strain the liquid into a clean container.

Use the rinse on freshly washed hair as a final rinse (don’t rinse it out).

💡 Optional: Add a few drops of essential oils (rosemary or peppermint) for extra potency and aroma.

How to Use

After shampooing and conditioning, pour the tea rinse slowly over your hair, making sure it touches your scalp and all strands.

Massage your scalp gently, & don't rinse the tea out.

Leave in like you would a leave in conditioner & let your hair air dry naturally.

Use 2–3 times a week for best results.

I’ve also started applying it as a spritz using a spray bottle, which has noticeably reduced how often I need to wash my hair each week!

I have fairly fine hair that tends to get oily after a couple of days. I used to wash it every second day, but since I started using this spritz between washes, I now only need to wash my hair once or twice a week.

It’s been a simple yet effective way to maintain scalp freshness and extend time between washes.

Next time you're steeping a cup of tea, consider steeping a little extra for your hair.

This rosemary, nettle, sage & peppermint hair tea is a simple, natural, and cost-effective way to add to your hair care routine, without harsh chemicals or complicated steps.

There’s something really powerful about realising you don’t need to rely on big brands or flashy products to care for yourself. You can reclaim that power with what’s already around you.

So here’s to returning to the basics, trusting our intuition, and remembering that beauty doesn’t have to come in a bottle.
